The New Xiaomi Portable 16,000 mAh Power bank is ridiculously powerful

BY Cavarii IN , , 6 comments

Xiaomi had officially launched a high-capacity 16,000mAh power bank on Thursday, 6 November 2014. It uses batteries made by LG and Samsung, too, so there’s a lot of R&D inside its smooth metal casing.

Here's a comparison of the 3 different sizes of Power banks produced by Xiaomi so far.

It's very obvious how much Apple design has influenced this product. The entire mass looks like it is an Apple product, wrapped in soft-touch anodised aluminium, with two endplates in stark white with a  MacBook Pro-esque circular power button. Honestly, These battery pack looks beautiful.

The top face has the power button, two full-sized USB charging ports, a micro-USB socket, and four tiny white LEDs in series. Same as the older power bank design, press the button, and the LEDs light up to tell you how much battery capacity the pack has remaining.

Plug a USB cable into any of the two full-sized USB ports and hook it up to a smartphone or tablet or other device in need of a charge, and the MI Charger automatically kicks into action. Plug a cable into the micro-USB socket and connect that to a USB wall-socket, and the cell starts to restore its lost capacity

The 16,000mAh capacity rating is, by official measurement, spot-on. From a fully topped-off charge, it can discharge and recharged am iPhone 6 5.5 times before the Mi Power Bank battery reported it was empty.

There’s enough energy stored away in the Mi Power Bank to restore Xiaomi's own Mi4 phone 3.5 times with plenty of change; an iPhone 6 can be charged almost 5.5 times. Even the long lasting iPad Mini can be fully recharged 2.5 times with a little juice to spare.

Charging it from empty to full is simple enough, although it takes time — we clocked a little over five hours for the battery to completely charge and report 100 per cent capacity.

Even with that pricing caveat, we still really like the Xiaomi MI Charger. It’s an odd thing to like, but we get a genuine kick out of throwing the battery into our backpack of a morning and knowing that we’ll never run out of phone, tablet or hotspot power at an inopportune time.

The new Mi-series 16,000 mAh power bank is very similar to the previous models, but with bumps in the energy capacity. It boasts of aluminum-brushed body with smooth curved rectangular bar design.
Under the hood, it houses five 3,200 mAh batteries (manufactured by LG/Panasonic) with 725Wh/L energy density, two USB ports and weighs 350g.

After coming out with 5,200 mAh and 10,400 mAh power bank models, it looks like the capacity for power banks from Xiaomi just keeps going up and up – with the Chinese gadget maker coming out with a 16000 mAh model. This power bank looks set to give you your mobile charging needs for one whole working week – at least, that should be the rationale for having a power bank with this much juice capacity.  Given a flagship gadget in today’s times – say, the Samsung Galaxy S5 – whose main battery capacity is rated at 2800 mAh, this new Xiaomi power bank should be able to give your Galaxy S5 at least 5 full charge cycles. And if you’re the “normal usage” type of user and your smartphone lasts you the whole working day, then the Xiaomi 16000 mAh power bank should be all the extra power you will ever need.

That’s not all. Given the extra large capacity, the 16,000 mAh Mi Power Bank will also feature dual-port output, allowing users to charge two devices simultaneously. And just like other Mi Power Banks, the new variant is also housed in a full aluminium case and uses LG and Samsung batteries. These new features definitely make the new 16,000 mAh Mi Power Bank an exceptionally good product.

Mi band - the first wearable gadget from Xiaomi

    BY Cavarii IN , , 2 comments

Mi Band is the first wearable gadget from Xiaomi, the Mi Band can monitor and help with your exercise routine, wake you up when you oversleep, and last for 30 days on a single battery charge. The Mi Band can also track your swimming routine since it's water resistant at a depth of more than three feet.
As far the design of Mi Band itself, it is plain and utilitarian. It is not going to win any points for stylishness, but there is a certain dignity in a plain design that will appeal to many people.

The Mi Band comprises of a small silver-coloured tablet that is fit into a rubber strap that you wear around your wrist. This alloy body consists of the ample 30-day long battery, a Bluetooth chip, accelerometer and proximity sensor. These combine to track various activities and offer detailed analysis through the companion app.

The operation is very simple and easy-to-understand and you can leave the Mi Band to its task without the need to keep tinkering with settings or buttons.  There are no buttons present on the device. There are three multi-coloured notification LEDs to give feedback about your progress towards your daily goal, among other purposes.

The Mi Band is rated to the IP67 standard for water-resistant, which is a necessary feature to have on a wearable device since it will have to contend with sweat and the occasional water contact. According to Xiaomi, the wristband uses is made with Dow Corning TPSiV material which provides it with strong anti-ultraviolet UV resistance, anti-bacterial, and anti-allergic protection.

The Mi Band records your movement data throughout the day.

The Mi Band can also be set to vibrate after a missed call, but no other notifications from apps or SMS are available. You can adjust the missed call alert settings so that it buzzes just three seconds after an incoming call, it effectively lets you know when someone is calling immediately rather than after you have actually missed it.

Xiaomi smartphone owners get an extra perk: the Mi Band will automatically unlock your phone if you hold them near each other. That’s the gimmick that other Android phone owners don’t get.

Like other fitness bands, the Mi Band takes on extra powers when paired with a smartphone such as unlocking your phone when the two devices are nearby, but this only works with Xiaomi smartphones with Android 4.4 and above.

Outfitted with Android 4.4 and Bluetooth, the Mi Band comes in a range of colors, including blue, pink, brown, black, purple, and gray.

The Mi Band boasts an impressive 30-day battery life. That's a far cry from the Fitbit's four-day charge and the Jawbone's 10. When it is running low, a few minutes on the charger is all you need for several more days of power. That means less stress about whether or not it’s about to die, and more time spent actually wearing the device and collecting useful data.

    Setting Up
Once the Mi Band app is downloaded and installed, it will automatically switch to your phone’s set language, either Chinese or English.

Pairing the Mi Band to your phone via Bluetooth is quick and painless, requiring just a few quick taps to set up.

Enter a few personal stats like age, height, and weight, and you’re on your way.

There's no need to take your phone with you on a walk or run; the app will automatically sync as soon as you’re back in Bluetooth range.

You can set a daily goal for how many steps you aim to take, which by default is set at 8,000.

Depending on your progress, making a gesture as if you’re looking at a wristwatch will prompt the Mi Band to light up in your preferred color: one light for one-third, two lights for two-thirds, three lights for goal completed.

The lights can be difficult to see in direct sunlight.

Wakeup alarms in the app unfortunately don’t sync with any other alarm apps you might have installed.

The alarm gently vibrates three times and then turns off. There’s no snooze or option to make it keep vibrating until you give some sort of input, like a tap or other gesture.

If it doesn't wake you right away, then you’d better have a backup alarm ready.

    mi band app

The Mi Band app opens to a step counter and feed of your recent sleep cycles and walking activity. You can track previous days' steps, how far you've walked, and how many calories you've burned. For sleep cycles, the Mi Band monitors how long you slept and for how long you were in a "deep sleep:.The app does little to advise on how the users can improve their daily cycles, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing for those who just want a clear cut readout and not a robot coach.

Xiaomi iHealth Blood Pressure Docking Station

BY Cavarii IN , , No comments

Xiaomi unveils a smartphone dock that takes your blood pressure and other health readings
Xiaomi had launched its first ever healthcare product, a smart blood pressure monitor. The blood pressure cuff, and accompanying phone dock was made in partnership with US-based iHealth Labs.

Xiaomi promises the blood pressure monitor will be easy to use and meets all the necessary professional medical standards and certifications. A customized App for Xiaomi, tracks blood pressure, heart rate, average pulse and more on a real-time chart, then make recommendations for improvement.

Xiaomi said the blood pressure monitor can be used on other Android devices, but it is best suited for Xiaomi smartphones.

Xiaomi Ventures had announced a US$25 million investment into iHealth Labs. iHealth, while a officially a Silicon Valley-based company, is actually a spin off of China-based Andon Health. iHealth Labs makes a full suite of home healthcare products, such as wireless scales, fitness devices, and glucometers.

The dock is accompanied by an app. Together they track blood pressure (including systolic and diastolic blood pressure) and heart rate. The doc includes an attached pad which is simply attached to a person’s arm, as happens in a hospital, to get things going.

The app is then used to operate the device.  Xiaomi says that the dock is easy to use, perhaps making it ideal for older customers, while the results can be shared with others, such as friends, family or doctors.

Like other Xiaomi devices, this seems like a China-only initiative, for now at least, currently the App interface is only available in Mandarin.

iHealth Labs, which is a US venture run China-based Andon Health, is focused on health and fitness products, as the name suggests. Xiaomi stepped into this segment when it launched a fitness band, and its involvement in iHealth Labs means we are likely to see it make more moves in this space in the future.

iHealth Blood Pressure Monitor intelligent cloud is very simple to use. Users merely download the iHealth App to their Xiaomi phone, plug the phone to the supplied dock and the App will automatically open. Put on the cuff, tap on "Start measurement", sit back, relax and the blood pressure measurement will be measured.

In addition, the product also offers cloud synchronization. As long as the phone is connected to the network, the measurement results will automatically sync to the cloud. The results can also be shared with family and friends.
